Stand in front of any fragrance counter and you will see the same names repeated next to a scent: Parfum, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Cologne. These aren’t marketing flourishes — they tell you how concentrated the fragrance is, and that concentration shapes how strong it smells and how long it lasts.
It all comes down to oil concentration
Every perfume is a blend of aromatic oils dissolved in alcohol. The difference between these categories is simply the percentage of fragrance oil in the mix. The higher the concentration, the richer and longer-lasting the scent — and, usually, the higher the price.
Parfum (Extrait)
Parfum, sometimes called extrait de parfum, has the highest concentration of fragrance oil — typically around 20 to 30 percent. It is intense, long-lasting, and needs only a small amount. Because it sits so close to the skin and lasts for many hours, a single application can carry you through an entire evening.
Eau de Parfum (EDP)
Eau de Parfum, or EDP, usually contains around 15 to 20 percent fragrance oil. It is the sweet spot for most people: rich and long-lasting enough to project well, yet versatile enough for everyday wear. If you want a fragrance that stays with you for the better part of a day without reapplying, EDP is the concentration to look for.
Eau de Toilette (EDT) and Eau de Cologne
Eau de Toilette, or EDT, sits lower at roughly 5 to 15 percent. It is lighter and fresher, fading sooner, which makes it well suited to hot weather and casual daytime wear when you don’t want to overpower a room. Eau de Cologne is lighter still, at around 2 to 4 percent — bright and refreshing, but the shortest-lived of all.
Which should you choose?
If longevity and presence matter most — for evenings, events, or cooler weather — reach for an Eau de Parfum or a parfum. For light, fresh, everyday wear in the heat, an Eau de Toilette can be perfect. There is no single right answer; the best choice depends on when and how you intend to wear it. What matters is knowing what the label is telling you so you can buy with confidence.
